As technology has grown, the number of people who use the internet has only risen exponentially. This has created a surge in people seeking online freelance work. It used to be hard for freelancers to secure a steady stream of work, but overtime organizations and activists have helped create a leveled playing field. Its estimated that within the nest few years, freelancing will compose nearly half of the work force. The raise of freelance as a profession led to the creation of Elance in 1999.

Elance was a freelance marketing platform where users could post or accept offers. The company merged with oDesk in 2013, and ultimately became Upwork Global, Inc by 2015. The site currently boasts over 140 million users from nearly every country in the world. There are many aspects to the “gig market” beyond just writing. Some people can drive items around, perform local odd jobs, or even perform very specific professional level services. There is something for everyone on Upwork.

Naturally, there are positives to online freelance work for people of all backgrounds. Some prefer to work from the comfort of their home, while others will become digital nomads. Millennials in particular are profiting from travel vlogs where they share their experiences. Older users are likely using online freelance as a means to make a little extra money. However, its important to be aware of the negatives of Freelancing. You are your own boss, and as such, you are responsible for your own taxes, health insurances, and retirement costs. It can be daunting for newcomers, but well rewarded with proper time management and knowledge.

Freelance is a field not for the weak minded. It requires a lot of patience and discipline. New users will find it takes awhile to get their footing, but once they an established reputation, the clients will start pouring in. Platforms such as Upwork are a great place for everyone, of all skill levels, to find new jobs. It’s not an easy profession, but Freelancing bears great rewards.
