Alex Pall grew up DJ-ing in New York City as more of a hobby than anything else. He loved dance music and his passion drove him to pursue this hobby to fruition. It didn’t start out as immediate success, not until he met Andrew Taggart (Drew) and it was Taggart’s self-proclaimed “love at first sight” that rocketed Pall and The Chainsmokers into success. Alex and Drew immediately started worked together after meeting, with Alex quitting his job and Drew moving to New York from Maine. It seemed to be the jump worth making for both. The two were a perfect match from the get-go, changing the dance music scene with innovations like adding lyrics to a dance track and with the DJ performing lyrically on a track. Alex Pall describes working with his track mate as more of a feeling they both have than some way of working that can be written down and replicated. The two discuss and discover themselves together and this often occurs during late night conversation.

Alex Pall cannot pinpoint exactly what it was about Andrew Taggart that caused him to quit his job and give dance music a real go. He knows, though, that it was meeting Drew and quitting his job that lead the Chainsmokers to their real start. The start, is just that to the pair, however. The Chainsmokers seek to constantly change and adapt themselves to what their fans and listeners want to hear. Alex Pall does not limit this idea to just the music, but to The Chainsmokers live performances as well. Pall and Taggart describe the change in their concerts from a college rave with limited attendants to full blown concerts where the attendees expect more than just a DJ behind a green screen. Alex and Drew take these changes in stride and look forward to the changes they will have to make to their own self-identity to stay in the forefront of the music industry.
